Connecting a Linux box to an OS/2 network

The question.  How do you get an OS/2 peer to peer network with file and print sharing to talk to a Linux machine - without messing up the network?

A simple request that I'm sure does not have a simple answer.

The network is a mixture of MCP and ACP boxes plus a windows XP notebook and they need to see the open SUSE v11.0 machine.  Most connections are cabled through 3 EUSSO 8 port switches and a Linksys WRT54GC Broadband Router that is the DHCP server.

The requirement that the existent network is not changed is vital because some of the machines are moved to other sites and must be able to connect to the OS/2 networks there.

The easiest way, if your OS/2 network is set to use Netbios over TCP/IP, then run Samba on the Linux box.  Samba talks Netbios over TCP/IP.  But there may be some challenges with logins and security, as I know of no way for Samba to read the OS/2 Peer ACL file(s), so if account level security is needed on the Linux machine, you may need to re-create all the user ID's and passwords on the Linux box (which would be a pain IMHO).  But if you're not worried about security on the Linux box, then just leave the stuff with guest access on your OpenSUSE machine and it'll work.

The other way you could do it is with NFS, OS/2 does support NFS, there are ways to do that with XP too, but this would be adding another protocol to the mix on your network.

Thanks for your comments.  I have now downloaded OpenSuSE11 and installed it on one of my machines which means my network is like a smaller version of what they have, minus the win xp.

I assume when you say run samba on Open SuSE you mean start samba server.  I have done that and see nothing from any of my OS/2 boxes, other than each other as normal, and nothing from the Open SuSE box.

What I'm hoping to be able to do is write a description of what to do that I can e-mail to the site and let them do it there - saves me a 100 km round trip drive up the mountains.

As I said, it sounds simple but isn't.

The next question is - now what?  Tell them to use a USB hard disk and pass it round?
