HELP: Using two NIC Cards?

Hi All,

I have a system I am trying to get two NIC Cards working in... one for NetBIOS, and one for TCP/IP. So far, no luck.

The Machine and NIC Specs:

  • Netfinity 7000 M10
  • Quad Xeon 550
  • 4GB RAM
  • (2) Intel Pro 1000 MT 32 bit Copper NICs

The OS Specs:

  • Warp Server for e-Business CP2 PF
  • No updates
  • Current Intel Pro 1000 NIC drivers

The current situation:

  • When the machine boots, it detects and activates both NIC cards
  • When OS/2 loads, the drivers (installed using MPTS and the cards' slot IDs) both load, and indicate both cards are active.
  • Once the system is booted, using netstat -n and other parameters, indicate Interface 0 and Interface 9 (loopback)
  • Neither devices show up in the hardware device tree - so that is no help
  • Using MPTS, assigning TCP/IP to one card, and NetBIOS to the other works - as long as the device ID (assigned to the protocol) for both is set at 0 - setting one of the IDs to 1 results in that protocol not loading properly
  • Setting both protocol device IDs to 0 works, but seems to be using the same adapter (which is not what I would like to do)

MPTS Device Tree (where protocols are assigned) as currently working:
Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Connection

  • 0 - IBM TCP/IP
Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Connection

  • 0 - IBM OS/2 NetBIOS

MPTS Device Tree (where protocols are assigned) that also works but still seems to use the same adapter:
Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Connection

  • 1 - IBM TCP/IP
Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Connection

  • 0 - IBM OS/2 NetBIOS



I am currently at a loss on how to configure this system to make use of one card per protocol, and make both cards viewable/usable in Warp. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The summary:

How the heck do I get two NIC Cards working (one for TCP/IP and one for NetBIOS) under WSeB? I know it supports them, and this card is supposedly supported in such mode...

But unfortunately I couldnt find reference to how to get the two cards actually showing as usable in Warp - the discussions all started from after that point.

Hi,

You mentioned using MPTS to change the LAN card setup.

With WSeB, you *must* use the LAN Installation/Configuration program when changing the number of logical adapters. This program will call MPTS, but it also updates the IBMLAN.INI file to setup the correct logical LAN Server adapters.

Hi Moby,

I will give that a try... oddly though, I tried the same thing on an eCS machine with two Intel Pro 100's (not Pro 1000's like the server) and had the same (bad) results. These are two cards (of three) I had working and recognized in the Netfinity - though I installed the drivers during the install (and then had to assign the Slot IDs after). Maybe that's where it got messed up this time around.

Will see what happens when I use the LAN Install/Config program.

1. You should check LANTRAN.LOG file (usually it is in x:\IBMCOM directory). This file shows the protocols assigned to LAN cards. If needed use MPTS to assign protocols. For instance, TCP/IP - for adapter 0, NETBEUI - for adapter 1.

2. Configure TCP/IP. You should select "Use interface" for LAN interface 0 and other parameters.

3. Configure LAN SERVER (or PEER). As far as I remember (I don't use neither LS nor PEER) you should correct file IBMLAN.INI and assign interface 1 for LS (PEER).

If it is not convenient for you, assign interface 0 for NETBEUI and interface 1 for TCP/IP in STEP 1 and configure TCP/IP to use interface 1 in STEP 2.

Well, one thing I found out is I am an idiot... NetStat -n only reports the adapters that TCP/IP is bound to... ah well... I never claimed to be smert!

Had a similar problem, 1 entriy in ibmlan.ini were not updated correctly
when using MPTS configuration program:

[networks]

; This information is read by the redirector at device initialization time.
  net1 = NETBEUI$,1,LM10,34,100,14

As far as I recall, changing the parameter after NETBEUI$ from 0 to 1 fixed it.

(With 2 identical NIC's I also had to enter slot and mac-addrs to get it to work.)

Hi Raiko,

Tried that but NETWKSTA.200 wouldnt load. Anyways... I set it back to 0 and set TCP/IP to 1, and all seems well. All of this is simply because I forgot that netstat only shows TCP/IP interfaces... :(
