Raymond Beehler sent me this bounty suggestion.

The bounty ideas is to create a driver for the advanced features found in many touchpads utilizing the Synaptics "Absolute Mode" protocol.  This driver must utilize the basic features of the synaptics touchpad ("basic" being tapping and scrolling) and allow the user to turn them on/off.

The next link (attached too) is the synaptics protocol guide for PS/2, it should be very similar for USB.

Guess there's not as much interest as I thought.  Darn.

Personally, I would be just as happy if touch pads went away all together. All of my systems that have one of those things have it disabled in the BIOS, so that I don't have stray mouse movements, or button pushes, when I am typing. IMO the touch pad is probably the very worst HID ever invented.

We use Thinkpads at work... I finally turned the touchpad off in my images (Windows) and make everyone turn it on if they want it as it just causes so many stray mouse operations as I end up bumping it all the time.  With Windows at least it is just a Fn-F8 to be able to turn it on and off so it makes it easy for me to tell people how to turn it on as there are an amazing number of folks who will use it over the Trackpoint.
