Samba vs Peer for file sharing...

Hi,

Has anyone tried to do any type of comparison of Samba versus shares on Peer on eCS / Warp 4 for items such as speed, reliability, etc?  I've got a machine currently running Peer with shares turned on, doing basic file serving for a small office (9 computers).  I'm debating switching it over to running Samba, but just wondering if anyone has done any type of benchmark to see which is faster / more reliable (of course, the system running Peer has never had any issues with reliability).

I havent done any tests... but I can tell you that both peer and LanMan seem to think they should be configured for a 10Mb network - and running the WS Tuner will recommend slowing things down even more... on gigabit systems nonetheless. So, currently I am getting horrendous performance. Transferring 40GB via 1Gb took a day and a half...

Hmm... maybe I should do some non-scientific testing and see what  I get...

I've got a machine sitting at home that is set up on my local network... I can safely test moving some large files around with both Samba and Peer on it...  won't be extensive, but will give a general idea.

And perhaps someone with a bit more experience can help point me in the right direction to tune my NetBIOS stuff...

Currently, I'm just FTP'ing stuff from one machine to another as it is 20 times faster...

Take a look at http://svn.netlabs.org/samba/wiki/FAQ

Kind regards,

Thanks Herwig!

It's a good read - succinctly answers the questions asked.

And I'll add to that - I wanted to maintain my NetBIOS implementation on the WSeB boxes (as opposed to NetBEUI)... though XP does come with the driver (which sits on the CD and is not installed except manually), the fact is MS seems to have (intentionally?) broken something in the NetBIOS driver.

As an FYI... while sharing files and directories seems to work ok, you can only intermittently (rarely) share printers. Uninstalling NetBEUI on the Windows machine and installing the NetBIOS driver would, you would think, cause all NetBIOS traffic to be handled as... NetBIOS traffic... well, not with the NetBIOS driver that comes with XP - not anymore. For some reason, when trying to print, a portion of the traffic gets sent through the supposedly uninstalled NetBEUI subsystem (over TCPIP instead of direct NetBIOS).

The XP machines bog down and applications hang sitting there waiting for their print dialog to initialize... because of course, the WSeB machines are ignoring the NetBEUI traffic.

How did I figure this out? Well, the XP machines (usually - but not always) properly read the printer's queue information - but printing only sometimes works (1 out of every 10 times maybe). And monitoring the WSeB firewall when trying to print shows a bunch of neat traffic from the XP machine on the ports used by (the supposedly uninstalled) NetBEUI.

Soon as I have the time, Samba is gonna get a test on this network.

Robert
