Neil,

Glad you got it to work! One thing to check that I had some trouble with...  make sure the resolution set in the job properties for the eCS printer(s) is the same as the resolution set in the CUPS printer interface settings. I set all mine to the maximum....

Does anyone know a laser printer (black and white or a color one) which works with CUPS? I have to purchase one and in doing so, I will be able to contribute at the product's testing.

Many thanks.

well first: I have not used CUPS nor have I any clue about the requirements... but:
Samsung offers the CLP-300 series, a very affordable and (as far as I have tested it for a Windows customer) good color laser printer. I checked their "Linux" drivers and it seems there is not only PPD files but also lots of other stuff for CUPS in it.

For b/w printers, I very much like the Brother brand for their mechanical reliability.
http://solutions.brother.com/linux/en_us/ looks promising...

Perhaps that helps? Any more suggestions?

Cheers,
Thomas

Hi All

Having mentioned earlier in this thread that I was putting a cups "how to" together here is the url for those interested http://svn.netlabs.org/ecups/wiki/HowTo

Hope it is of help/use  :-)

A word of warning - whilst both Samsung and Brother have linux support, they don't release source.... Splix is an open source implementation of a driver for Samsung printers, but doesn't (yet) support all printers, and there are a few remaining issues with the OS/2 port.

Thanks Paul for your advice. Do you suggest a HP laser printer instead of a Samsung or a Brother one?

For Pete:

You did a great job putting a HowTo for Cups!
Many Thanks.

Anything that's listed at http://gutenprint.sourceforge.net/p_Supported_Printers.php3 is what I would recommend (for use with CUPS).

Having said that, the Splix driver should offer good support for supported Samsung printers once it's debugged for OS/2.

I'm looking at buying a Samsung SPL-300 for debugging purposes.

Cheers,

Paul.

I've got an OKI C5450DN (Duplex + Network; supports PCL6 and PS3) color laser printer (actually it's an LED printer) which works with the PPD file from OKI and IBMs Postscript package. I created a new printer driver with the PPD and the Postscript package. The latest postscript package had an issue...but the previous release worked - don't know what went wrong as I created the driver 2 years ago. ;)

The printer is no longer available but there are newer models available.
It's a great printer and the newer models also had good critics in reviews on the german druckerchannel.de website.

I've not yet tried to use the printer with CUPS but I might try it once I unpack the rest of my hardware (I just relocated and most of my stuff is still in packing cases).

FWIW - I built the ddk source for the postscript driver last night.  It can be found at http://download.smedley.info/pscript_30_800.zip  I ran out of time to test it last night, but intend to tonight - not that this include _no_ PPD files - the user needs to add any that are required.

Next steps are to rename the driver, and import the Gutenprint PPD's so that it's ready to use.

Cheers,

Paul.

I have tried the very similar, but earlier OKI C5300 color network printer. It works in CUPS. I also tried using it directly with the PPD file imported into the IBM postscript driver, and while it worked, the best performance was with the Apple Color Laserwriter driver.

Thinking back to the old days of printing from IBM OS/2 1.3, I think the Apple Color Laserwriter driver might be the best one for most postscript printers. I don't think printing support in OS/2 has been improved much since 1.3.

Hi Guys,

http://download.smedley.info/gutenprt-5.2.0-beta3-os2.zip

DDK postscript driver source built as gutenprt.drv - with approx 650 Gutenprint ppd files pre-imported/filtered/etc.

Any more ppd files and the driver starts behaving erratically - reminds me of the IBM postscript driver 30.827!!

I've selected mainly Canon/HP/Epson printers to include - hopefully people will find this useful as it means no buggering around importing ppd files into pscript.drv!

Cheers,

Paul.

For Pete: Thanks for the HowTo, it worked like a charm (after deleting all printers with prndrv), finally I'm able to print doublesided from OS/2 to my Canon IP4000.

In general, it appears that (some) 'print job properties' in the OS/2 application don't have much effect. To print double sided, I have to set Cups so (via localhost:631), it doesn't matter what I set in e.g. OpenOfice.
Is this always so? I though such options were passed as 'job control' in the Postscript file ?

We made progress on such things yesterday - the OS/2 postscript driver has some deficiencies :)

Try using http://download.smedley.info/gutenprt-5.2.0-beta3-os2-20080713.zip

This driver has:
1) pscript.drv built as gutenprt.drv
2) Approx 650 of the simplified ppd files pre-imported into the driver
3) Some fixes to postscript syntax and by one user's accound, enable all the settings to work.

The reasons why the IBM postscript code fails are listed at: http://article.gmane.org/gmane.org.netlabs.ecups.devel/236

Saijin_Naib

Nice stuff Paul :) Seems like something that can be parsed out of the .drv files by a script of some sort making available to us a ton of .ppd files!

Hi Paul,

I only had now time to test your Gutenprint driver. In combination with Cups 1.3.8 it still is so for me that Cups seems to determine printer options, not the user/application. I tested with Cups' printers options set to single sided, and print from Lucide 2 pages set to double sides, but they came out single. I will try to get a PS file output for double sided from both OS/2 and Linux, and see if I can spot the difference.
