Hi folks,

just lately I took a look on Ulrich Moeller's XWorkplace site and came about a link banner named "burn all gifs". Quite curious as I am, I clicked on it and found out, that I am might be offending patent laws because of the use of (animated) GIFs on my site... more exactly: The use of the LZW compression algorithm used in the processing of such files.

Since I didn't hear of that on the news before, I thought it might be interesting to others. It appears that Unisys has taken opportunity of a flaw in copyright laws to get hold of the patent in some way. So, folks at
"burnallgifs.org" advise people to use the free PNG format instead. There's also a free replacement for animated GIFS which is called MNG. Most contemporary browsers already support PNG and a subset of MNG
capabilities and... PNG even uses less space than GIF!

Well, I don't want to spread some sort of panic, but want to advise every writer/owner/etc. of internet media to take a visit to
HTTP://WWW.BURNALLGIFS.ORG

Cheers
Thomas
