Manufactured with 0.13-micron processing, the 2GHz Celeron also marked the beginning of a new processing era for the company's Celeron line.
Compared to 0.18-micron technology, 0.13-micron processing is able to cut Intel's production costs by 45%. Considering that the price of mainstream products in the value market, which the Celeron line targets, is around US$80, Intel is expected to speed up the transfer to 0.13-micron processing to seek better profits.
However, with Celeron's socket architecture, processing technology and clock speed being updated to be closer to the Pentium 4, concerns about P4 sales being affected by the Celeron line have also started appearing in the market, which may be something Intel needs to take into consideration while pushing Celeron production to 0.13-micron processing.
The Socket 478 Celeron has enjoyed great popularity and even once fell into short supply. However, as some older Socket 370 Celeron inventory still has to be consumed, the overall shipment ratio of the Socket 478 Celeron remains smaller than that of the older Celeron products, Taiwanese vendors said.
