An updated, 533MHz FSB (front-side bus)-supporting chipset, the 845GV, reportedly will join Intel's Pentium 4 chipset family in September, shortly before the company's launch of its DDR333-based 845PE and 845GE chipsets in October.
According to sources, Intel recently informed motherboard clients that besides launching its 3.06GHz Pentium 4 processors in the fourth quarter, it will also introduce a new chipset in September. An updated version of the 845GL integrated chipset, the new 845GV supports 533MHz FSB-based P4 processors and the DDR266 interface. The product will be quoted US$2-3 higher than the 845GL. However, like the 845GL, the 845GV is unable to support an extra graphics card.
Though surprised, motherboard makers generally expressed aloofness towards the new 845GV, given the already complicated chipset portfolio Intel has to offer. Previously, Intel had informed them that the 845GE and 845PE would be the only two chipsets unveiled in the second half.
Motherboard manufacturers cautioned that with unsuitable market positioning, the new 845GV will likely endanger the currently good sales of the 845G, as the 845GV can support the latest FSB technology and is quoted at a price considerably lower than the 845G.
Board makers suggested that Intel's surprising decision to introduce the 845GV is likely due to competition from Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS). Sales of Intel's low-end 845GL have been rather weak, whereas SiS's SiS650 and SiS651 have received good market acceptance with their cheaper prices and more advanced specifications. Besides being priced around US$5 lower than the 845GL, the SiS650 and SiS651 are also able to support a 533MHz FSB and allow users to plug in an additional graphics card.
