Nvidia is set to launch its nForce 2 Advanced Micro Devices (AMD)-based core logic chipset on July 16, sources said. For the product line, Nvidia will introduce a Crush 18D discrete and one Crush 18G integrated chipset, and supporting motherboards will hit the market in August.
Motherboard manufacturers are said to regard the new chipset as having great potential, given its price/performance ratio. Based on the DDR400 platform, the nForce 2 supports the USB 2.0, IEEE 1394 and ATA-133 interfaces. For the integrated chipset, a GeForce4 MX440-equivalent core also allows the new product's graphics technology to lead Intel's latest 845G by two generations. The graphics performance of the 845G is closer to that of Nvidia's GeForce2 MX200 chip.
As for the price, the Crush 18G is also reported to be sold at a more “appealing” price, unlike its predecessors, the nForce 420-D and 620-D.
Attracted by the new chipset's features, many board makers have decided to halt the launch of their nForce 615-D and 620-D motherboards, and introduce the nForce 2 line directly, sources said.
Graphics card makers are now wary about the possible sales impact of the nForce 2, seeing the competitive specifications it possesses. At present, the influence of Intel's 845G has become more apparent in the market.
In June, graphics card manufacturers generally reported rather weak sales performance. In addition to slow demand, anticipation of new products from ATI Technologies and Nvidia in the third quarter was one of the reasons. At the moment, ATI is said to plan to roll out its latest RV250 chip in August, while Nvidia has decided to push the launch of its new NV18 to September to allow more room for the promotion of its nForce 2 chipset.
