In March 2004, Intel announced that it would match AMD's audacious leap of providing 64-bit extensions to the x86 architecture. And sure enough, within a few months, it was shipping Xeon processors with the new EM64T technology. These chips went head-to-head with AMD's Opteron server and Athlon 64 desktop chips.
