Rumours of OS/2's death greatly, or maybe slightly exaggerated

IBM's guidance slightly Warped

By Mike Magee: Thursday 12 December 2002, 13:42

A MIGHTY STORM IN A TEACUP has broken out all over the place after IBM posted a message on its web site that from the end of March next year, it was discontinuing OS/2 Warp.

The controversy has blown up because a number of firms, notably Serenity Systems International and Ecomstation have plans to both continue and develop support for the operating system which Microsoft once endorsed.

The controversy is continued at Usenet group COMP.OS.OS2.MISC, where a number of people in the know describe IBM's "withdrawal of marketing" as not particularly important. Some contributors suggest OS/2 be released to Open Source when and if the day ever dawns that Big Blue is tired of it....
