IBM already paid a steep price for staying above the fray. During the
early 1990s, the company went through the motions of fighting a rear
guard battle against Microsoft during the operating system wars
between Windows and OS/2. But beyond helping foster a people's jihad
(remember Team OS/2?), Big Blue was a big flop when it came to mixing
it up. Had it chosen to get tough, management could have had a real
field day recounting what they described as Microsoft's checkered
history of double crosses.
