If you are the proud owner of an ASUS (or any other) AMD Athlon64 motherboard based on the VIA chipset, here is some GREAT news regarding yesterdays anouncement of the Uniaud (Universal Audio driver based on the ALSA project) 1.1.4 Release Candidate 1 driver.

Previously, the only choice for OS/2 & eCS users with the VIA VT823x + Soundmax AD1980 (or AD1981) chipset combination that ASUS, and some other motherboard makers have been using was the Uniaud driver, which yielded poor to very poor sound quality results for that hardware (note that the Soundmax drivers on Hobbes are only for the Intel + Soundmax chipset combination). The GREAT news is that the new Uniaud 1.1.4 RC1 drivers are nothing short of an enormous improvement. Sound quality is EXCELLENT.

If you have this hardware, and you have been getting by with either no sound, or poor sound quality, and were waiting for the Uniaud final release, I can whole heartedly recommend that you do your ears a favor, and upgrade to RC1 *NOW*.

Again, as I previously stated, RC1 is NOT a full release. You will first need to install the full (old) version:

ftp://ftp.os2.kiev.ua/uniaud/uniaud20040122.zip

Then grab the new release at Netlabs:

ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/uniaud/uniaud114rc1.zip

And finally, copy the new files over the old files.

Also, I failed to mention yesterday that there is a newsgroup available for the Uniaud project at:
